WIDRO Vision, Mission and Strategy

Our Vision:

To be a network of faith-based groups committed to collaboratively maximizing the deployment of our respective resources when responding to Washington State disasters.

Our Mission:

  • To provide an essential and primary link for communicating key information and guidance among faith-based groups/individuals/communities following a disaster event.

  • To help initiate and facilitate the formation, management and operation of local interfaith/long-term recovery organizations (LTROs).

  • To provide available financial, material, human and spiritual resources in responding to needs documented by Washington Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (WAVOAD) and/or a local LTRO.

  • To partner with WAVOAD non-faith members and other organizations or groups not WAVOAD members, plus local, state and federal disaster response programs, to provide assistance to people and communities regardless of race, religion, gender or legal status, particularly those most vulnerable.

  • To provide and enhance the unique gifts of pastoral care and ministry to address emotional and spiritual trauma experienced by those impacted by a disaster.

  • To provide and make available spiritual care and support for caregivers.

  • To be available to continue with long-term recovery efforts for as long as necessary.

  • To engage in disaster-related education, preparation and mitigation efforts between disaster events.

Our Strategy:

  • Establish an advisory board within the structure and management of Associated Ministries of Tacoma/Pierce County, to establish and maintain programs, policies, procedures and oversight.

  • Maintain a network of people and organizations from faith-based and other organizations willing to share information, experiences, resources and strategies.

  • Maintain an administrative office to manage routine program activities generally on a volunteer basis except during times of increased work load related to a disaster event.

  • Participate in fund-raising efforts to financially support an operational program budget that includes both administrative costs and start-up and program grants for new and operational interfaith/LTRO programs as well as special needs documented by WAVOAD.

  • Maintain the capacity to serve as a primary communication link between and among WIDRO Partners including operational interfaith/LTROs.

Services provided during Active Disaster Recovery Activities:

  • Contact network partners providing services within impacted area and assess their potential capacity to respond.

  • Develop resources to enable local WIDRO network partners to establish and maintain a long-term recovery program.

  • Establish contact with local faith organizations and community agencies within impacted areas when a network partner is not available.

  • Develop resources to enable local faith organizations and community agencies to establish and manage an interfaith/LTRO program where appropriate.

  • Coordinate activities with WAVOAD and provide financial resources when available and appropriate to respond to unmet needs documented by the WAVOAD Unmet Needs Committee.

  • Serve as a liaison between LTROs and national denominations/faith-based groups and other interested national organizations.

  • Serve as a reliable source of disaster response and recovery information and expertise.

  • Serve as a communication link between and among active response and recovery groups.
